Government needs the money, but relief may be essential for struggling homeowners and businesses, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Cook County could delay the due date of the second installment of property taxes or waive interest charges for late payments, the newspaper reports.
Two people important to this process are Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Treasurer Maria Pappas, whose office sends out the bills and collects the money. They issued a joint statement that says, "Many property owners will not be able to pay their Second Installment property taxes in early August. Our offices are working closely to try to develop a plan to help those taxpayers."
