Homes owned in predominantly Black communities are more likely to be listed as delinquent than homes in predominantly white communities, according to data from the Cook County Treasurer's Office, WTTW/Channel 11 reports.

Properties with delinquent taxes are eligible for the Tax Sale, so the Treasurer's Office has been working to reduce the number of those properties, especially in predominantly African-American areas.

"It's simply a matter of not knowing," Treasurer Pappas says. "It's a matter of educating people."
