Young Democrats of Proviso Township hosted a virtual town hall with Treasurer Maria Pappas, Clerk Karen Yarbrough that was moderated by Maywood Trustee Nathaniel George Booker, chairman of the group, the Village Free Press reports.

Pappas told residents that about her new initiative called Black Houses Matter. "The reason we're calling it Black Houses Matter, is because of some stats," said Pappas, who pointed out the disparity between Black and other communities when it comes to the number of properties listed on the annual tax sale of delinquent properties.

The bills are due Aug. 3, but taxpayers have until Oct. 1 to pay them without penalty, Pappas also said.
