La Oficina de la Tesorería es consciente de que la gente no siempre puede conseguir el dinero a tiempo, especialmente dados los aumentos históricos de impuestos a la propiedad de este año en los suburbios del sur y suroeste. Si no puede reunir todo el dinero antes del 1 de agosto, hay otra opción disponible.

"En lugar de tratar de juntar la cantidad total, mi oficina acepta y fomenta los pagos parciales de los impuestos para aliviar la carga de pagar el monto total de una vez", dijo Pappas. "Esta opción puede ser más manejable para que los propietarios de vivienda y las pequeñas empresas paguen durante varios meses”.

Sin embargo, a pagos tardíos se les cobra una tasa de interés mensual del 0.75%. Pappas encabezó los esfuerzos en Springfield que culminaron con una legislación estatal que redujo el cargo mensual por multa de pago atrasado del 1.5% al 0.75%, o, en otras palabras, del 18% anual al 9% anual. El cambio entró en vigor con las facturas de impuestos de 2023 que vencen en 2024.

Las propiedades con morosidad están sujetas a la Venta Anual de Impuestos, que históricamente ocurre unos 13 meses después de la fecha de vencimiento.

Un análisis de la Oficina de la Tesorería, de las facturas de impuestos de la segunda cuota de 2023 enviadas por correo el 2 de julio a los propietarios de casi un millón 800 mil parcelas, mostró:

  • La factura impositiva mediana en los suburbios del sur y suroeste aumentó un 19.9% con respecto al año anterior;
  • Las facturas de impuestos medianas se dispararon en un 30% o más en 15 suburbios del sur;
  • 13 de los 15 suburbios con los aumentos más altos tienen poblaciones mayoritariamente negras.

“Estos aumentos están afectando a los hogares con personas mayores y otros residentes que no presupuestaron incrementos tan grandes y que no tienen el monto total disponible para pagar su factura de impuestos", dijo Pappas. "Los propietarios angustiados tienen la impresión de que, si no pagan su factura de impuestos antes del 1 de agosto, perderán su casa y ese no es el caso", dijo Pappas.
